What does a background check entail?
A background check of the applicant in accordance with Article 7 LuftSiG is mandatory for the provision of an Airport ID card with access rights to airside areas or the critical part of the security restricted area (Airport ID card category: V, SD, ZA, CH, R or hangars).
The Airport ID Office will forward the data of the applicant to the regional government in Düsseldorf as the applicable aviation authority. Where a valid background check (result) is submitted, the Airport ID Office will require written proof from the government department, which conducted the background check (result).
The following applies in general: One nationwide background check per person.
The background check is carried out by the applicable aviation authority in the form of requests/possible requests for information to various government agencies regarding any known facts from which concerns regarding attacks on the safety of air traffic could be construed if access were granted to airside areas or critical parts of the security restricted area. The personal background check includes the places of residence within the past 10 years. For persons, who have lived abroad within the past 5 years or are currently living abroad, the government office may request a police clearance record from the applicant.
Background checks are currently repeated every 5 years. The legal basis here is the Air Safety Background Check Act (LuftSiZÜV).
When do I need a background check?
You will need a valid background check in compliance with Article 7 LuftSiG if your job requires you to have access to airside areas or critical parts of the security restricted area and apply for a relevant Airport ID card (Airport ID card category: V, SD, ZA, CH, R or hangars).
You already have a relevant background check? Please submit written proof from the government department, which conducted the background check (result) to the Airport ID Office.

The background check must be repeated after five years. You are generally expected to apply for a new background check without official request. You will be deemed background checked in compliance with Article 5 Section 2 LuftSiZÜV until the availability of the repeated background check result, provided the recheck was applied for latest 3 months before the end of its validity.
The Airport ID Office will remind the employer in due time before the end of the validity of the current background check of the outstanding recheck.
Please note that this will be a reminder service only.
The responsibility for a timely recheck application submission (notwithstanding the request by the Airport ID Office) and for any repercussions due to a late recheck application lies solely with the applicant.
